rum distillery

Established on the slopes of Soufrière since the 17th century, the Bologna plantation experienced different types of crops until the middle of the 19th century when sugar cane monoculture was developed on all its plots. This revolution fully revealed the exceptional richness of this volcanic terroir and everyone agreed that the Bologna plantation concentrates on a few dozen hectares the most beautiful rum terroirs there are, with completely unique potential on the island. In operation since 1887, Bologna is the oldest distillery in Guadeloupe.

We are at the end of the 19th century, in the middle of the sugar crisis. The Marquis de Sainte Marie then indulges in games. Naturally, it was a failure and the marquis found himself obliged to sell what would become the Domaine du Marquisat de Sainte Marie. This estate, located a few meters from the landing site of Christopher Columbus in 1493, offers our visitors an unforgettable stopover, in an authentic setting, to discover a historical and cultural heritage...

In 1942, Roger Damoiseau senior, former ICAM & IEG engineer, decided to buy the Bellevue estate which had been abandoned until then, but at the cost of heavy debt. The company therefore resumed a sugar activity by making candies and jams, subsequently, rum quickly became the main production activity.

In 1968, Roger Damoiseau Jr. succeeded his father and continued to develop the family business to the point of being able to repay the company's debt through the sale of bulk rum.
His sons then began to work with him and helped him make the distillery prosper.

It was in 1995 that Roger left his place to Hervé Damoiseau who became president, his brother Jean-Luc taking care of production. Since 1978, Jean-Luc has become a master distiller and Sandrine Damoiseau, their sister, organizes the promotion of the brand through events.

The distillery was created in 1916 by the REIMONENQ family. And like most other distilleries on the island, the main production of the Museum Distillery is Rhum Agricole, distilled from pure sugar cane juice.
The distillery itself can only be visited very rarely and by reservation, however you can visit the rum museum and taste of course!

Built on the site of a former 18th century coffee producer whose name it has kept, the BIELLE distillery was created at the end of the 19th Century. Despite its successive changes of owners, it was able to evolve and modernize its facilities to the point of becoming the second distillery in Marie-Galante with a production of 330,000 liters of agricultural rum and derived liqueurs.

Aged in its own cellars, its rum has been awarded several times at the Concours Général Agricole, including 3 gold medals in 2016 for two of its Old Rums and its Bois Bandé liqueur, for example.

In its range of products, we find white rums bottled at 59° or 56° and even a latest addition, “Rhum Rhum” at 46°. In the range of dark rums: two rums at 42° aged in oak barrels of 9 and 10 years of age, and two marketed in barrel strength of 14 years (a rarity) at 49.8° and 6 years at 55.5°. Finally, let us note a specificity of the distillery, its rum-based liqueurs and flavored with natural (and local of course) aromas of coconut, coffee, chocolate, shrubb and bandé bois.

Located on the edge of the N9 near the beaches of the west coast between Grand Bourg and Saint Louis, the small artisanal distillery POISSON with barely 300,000 liters of rum produced per year, is nevertheless a must in Marie-Galante which will take you on a surprising return at the sources. Welcomed by smiling staff, in a green park with old mango trees and colorful flamboyant trees, you will immediately be won over by the picturesque and friendly atmosphere that emanates from the place. During a completely independent visit, like a treasure hunt, you will gradually discover the memory of this estate and the circuit of a rum with the flavors of yesteryear.

Sugar factory founded in 1860 by the Poisson family, the estate was transformed into a distillery in 1916 when it was bought by Edouard Rameau, descendant of 18th century settlers. The latter added a steam engine and a copper still and baptized his Rum under the name well known to initiates of “Père Labat”, in memory of a French missionary installed on the island at the end of the 17th century.

The few renovations made by the successors of E. Rameau will in no way distort this cultural heritage and it is at the heart of this history of more than a century that you will be immersed. Here, the witnesses of the past have in fact remained the same: the still and the recently stopped steam engine are still in place. The sugar boilers are still in their massive masonry and the thick-walled buildings as well as the main wooden house bear witness to their age.

The BELLEVUE estate, which began its activity of distilling agricultural rum in 1821, is today the largest distillery in Marie-Galante and the largest exporter in Guadeloupe with more than 900,000 liters of rum produced per year.

Housed in the heart of the largest sugarcane plantation on the island between Capesterre and the BIELLE distillery, you will not be able to miss this remarkable heritage, between tradition and modernity, which stands out in the distance in the Marie-Galantaise countryside. A superb and authentic restored mill, witness to a history of several centuries and whose wings turn with the trade winds (the only turning point in the Caribbean), adjoins a distillery completely renovated in the early 2000s. Stainless steel, copper and the bright colors of bold orange and cobalt green make this new establishment an architectural success. Focusing on modernity, equipped with high-performance equipment and cutting-edge technologies, the Bellevue distillery stands out for its choice of 100% non-polluting production, making it the first eco-positive estate in the Caribbean.
